We were saddened by the death in February of our president, Mr Paul Flynn MP, but felt very privileged to take part in his funeral at Newport Cathedral last month. Paul’s wife, Sam, had asked us to perform “I would be true”, and this is one of the pieces we are performing in our forthcoming Spring Concert. Paul was a faithful and loyal supporter of the choir and, despite his busy political life, he always made time to attend our concerts whenever possible. We shall miss him greatly.
We are very grateful to Dame Rosemary Butler for agreeing to be our new Choir President. She is a politician who was a Member of the National Assembly for Wales for Newport West from 1999 until 2016.

Serving briefly as Assembly Secretary for Education in the first two years of the Assembly, she was elected Deputy Presiding Officer of the Assembly in May 2007. Following her election in May 2011 she was appointed Presiding Officer of the Assembly. She retired from political office in 2016.

Dame Rosemary has always taken an interest in the choir and attended concerts when commitments permitted. We look forward to a long and happy partnership.
